Working at WriCampia
Join the WriCampia community as a staff member!
Writopia Lab, an award-winning 501(C)(3) nonprofit that runs the country's best creative writing workshops for kids and teens, is looking for creative, passionate, and hard-working Counselors and Writing Instructors to assist at WriCampia, our twelve-day sleepaway camp in August 2024. WriCampia is a creative writing-oriented sleepaway camp for kids ages 10 to 18. Our young writers produce a range of works including stories, poems, plays, graphic novels, songs, and more.
We are looking for staff members who are
- passionate about creative writing and working with young writers;
- hungry to work in a hands-on, collaborative, and fun environment; and
- excited by the idea of joining a community of writers and fostering literacy and joy in children and teens through creative writing!
Counselors are current college students, recent college graduates, and young professionals who are eager to support young writers and learn real-world skills in a fun, creative, supportive environment.
What Does a Counselor Do?
- WriCampia counselors are teaching assistants who serve as role models to our young writers while cultivating their confidence in — and love for — writing.
- While in our writing workshops, counselors provide typing, editorial, and moral support to our writers.
- Counselors sleep in a bunk and eat meals with their campers and provide support and guidance throughout camp.
- Counselors support and lead elective activities, which range from filmmaking, zine making, and spoken word, to roleplaying games, playwriting, novel writing, to lake, trapeze, horseback riding, and more!
- Counselors participate with their campers in Evening Activities like Scavenger Hunts and Dance Parties, and other camp-wide programming.
Instructors are published writers, produced playwrights, and teaching artists who lead writing workshops and a wide array of elective activities. We are looking for instructors who specialize in one or more of the following program areas: Creative Writing; Graphic Novels & Visual Arts; Playwriting & Performance; Filmmaking; Songwriting & Music; Journalism & Debate; Dungeons & Dragons & Role-Playing Games;
What Does an Instructor Do?
- Instructors teach three-hour morning workshops each day for a group of eight to ten campers. In workshop, Instructors lead Writopia Lab writing games and prompts, spend meaningful one-on-one time conferencing with each writer and providing high-level feedback on their writing projects, and facilitate group workshopping.
- Instructors teach three 90-minute elective activities per day, which range from filmmaking, zine making, and spoken word, to roleplaying games, playwriting, novel writing, and more!
- Instructors participate in camp-wide activities alongside their campers and provide support and mentorship to young writers throughout camp.
Staff Testimonials
--Cameron Dickerson
After being a camper for three years, one of which I was a CIT, it was extremely rewarding to finally be a counselor at WriCampia 2021. I absolutely loved coming to camp every year as a camper to make friends and do something I love. Getting to inspire younger minds and helping them achieve their writing goals was an amazing and valuable experience!--Jessica Zhao
